I can't find a gesture or method on UIImageView related to this either. It is also not associated with the UILongPressGestureRecognizer on the UICollectionViewCell's contentView. My UICollectionView has a UIScrollViewDelayedTouchesBeganGestureRecognizer and a UIScrollViewPanGestureRecognizer but continues to function in all ways. I believe the delay to be due to a gesture recognizer waiting for a scroll or pan gesture recognizer to fail but I have yet to find which gesture recognizer that may be. The animation also does not seem to be a result of a temporary change in focus as my collectionView:didUpdateFocusInContext:withAnimationCoordinator: method does not execute. This is further backed by not being able to reproduce the animation programatically by setting the UICollectionViewCell to selected or highlighted.

However, the same rules as before apply for the animation, which surprises me and shows me that cell selection and this animation are not linked. collectionView:shouldSelectItemAtIndexPath: is no longer ever called, I assume because the gesture recognizer for that method fails to my UITapGestureRecognizer. If I attach a UITapGestureRecognizer to the UICollectionViewCell the recognizer fires on all tap lengths. If I tap for half a second or longer, or I tap multiple times, the UIImageView scales down to represent that it has been selected and my UICollectionViewDelegate collectionView:shouldSelectItemAtIndexPath: method is fired. When an UICollectionViewCell item is focused and I tap the select button nothing happens. I've implemented a collection view with cells that are basically UIImageViews with adjustsImageWhenAncestorFocused set to YES.
